In 1981, the dictator regime of Ba'ath party transported Sulaimani University to Hawler.  After the uprising of 1991, which lead Kurds to have their own parliament and government, Kurdish experts and faithful people in Kurdistan, especially in Sulaimani, tried to reestablish Sulaimani University.
